Speak Volumes was established in downtown Peterborough in September of 2003 and is a specialty books and stationery store providing “information and inspiration”. Gareth Vieira and Stephanie Howell, store owners, have taken a significant step towards energy efficiency with the help of the Cool Shops program. They have committed to replacing 12 incandescent light bulbs with new Energy Star qualified compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs) and are changing their existing incandescent exit sign bulbs, to more efficient LED bulbs. CFLs use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescents and new LED exit sign bulbs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 10-25 years! In addition, they plan to install a new programmable thermostat which can lower their natural gas consumption by up to 15%.
