|
| Q: |
What is the offer? |
| A: |

|
| |
|
| Q: |
Why am I being asked to get rid of my old room air conditioner and/or dehumidifier? |
| A: |
Older room air conditioners and dehumidifiers use 30%-70% more energy than newer efficient ENERGY STAR® models. This can lead to unnecessarily high electricity bills.
The average room air conditioner used in Ontario's homes today generates 1.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide yearly. Carbon Dioxide is a known contributor to climate change.
Rust or erosion on an older window air conditioner could mean that harmful refrigerants (like CFCs and HCFCs) are polluting your air.
Window air conditioners and dehumidifiers create a large demand on electricity production in the summer time, so the use of fossil fuels soar when the temperature and humidity rise. This rise in electricity production contributes to higher smog forming emissions, and higher energy bills.
Summer peaks in energy consumption mean increased emissions of nitrogen oxides into the environment, a key element in producing ground level ozone – commonly referred to as smog. |

|
| Q: |
Why should I recycle my old unit instead of just throwing it out in the garbage? |
| A: |
Room air conditioners contain refrigerants which creates the "cooling" effect. These refrigerants are ozone depleting substances, and are controlled globally to ensure they are not released into the atmosphere. Old room air conditioning (RAC) units should be disposed of in an environmentally safe manner ensuring that ozone-depleting substances are handled properly and do not end up in landfills where these chemicals can contaminate groundwater sources.
The Ontario Power Authority and Canadian Tire will work with the Clean Air Foundation to ensure that all old room air conditioners are properly recycled. All room air conditioners will be processed through Total Home Comfort ensuring that ozone-depleting substances are handled in accordance with best practices. All ozone-depleting substances will be recycled and/or disposed of through the Refrigerant Management Canada program, a regulated program ensuring the proper disposal and re-use of refrigerants in Canada. All metals will also be recycled. |

| Q: |
I don’t drive; can someone come and pick up my room air conditioner or dehumidifier? |
| A: |
No. We are unable to pick up units as the program is being offered in-store only. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Can I bring in my old central air conditioner unit? |
| A: |
No. The program is strictly to recycle room air conditioner units and dehumidifiers. |
| |
|
| Q: |
My room air conditioner/dehumidifier doesn’t currently work, can I bring it in anyway? |
| A: |
Sure. We want to make sure all old room air conditioners and dehumidifier units are recycled properly. |
| |
|
| Q: |
Is there a limit to the number of air conditioners or dehumidifiers I can bring to participating retailers? |
| A: |
There is no limit on the number of air conditioners or dehumidifiers that you can bring in for free recycling. If you bring in your old room air conditioner or dehumidifier to Canadian Tire, there is no limit on the number of coupons you can receive but there is a limit of one coupon used per purchase towards a new ENERGY STAR® certified RAC or dehumidifier. |

|
| Q: |
Why do I need to give my postal code to a Keep Cool representative when I drop off my RAC or dehumidifier at a Canadian Tire? |
| A: |
Postal codes are collected for the Ontario Power Authority to use for energy savings attribution. In order to prove to the Ontario Energy Board, the governing body that reviews the energy savings attribution submissions from utilities, addresses are required to verify that the air conditioners and dehumidifiers/energy savings in fact did come from the participating utility's jurisdiction.
