Keep Cool
Keep Cool, a program of the Clean Air Foundation, is a market transformation campaign that encourages individuals to permanently retire and recycle their old, inefficient room air conditioners and to adopt cleaner more efficient cooling alternatives.
Did you know?
- Over one million Ontario homes that have window or room air conditioners (RAC)? These represent a significant impact on electricity demand.
- Older, inefficient RACs use 30-70% more energy than newer efficient ENERGY STAR® qualified models. The environmental impact of peak demand leads to high concentrations of smog-producing chemicals creating poorer air quality and increased greenhouse gases emissions.
PickupPal, the global online ridesharing & carpooling Website is partnering with the Clean Air Foundation to help you keep cool and cut your emissions, by helping you rideshare on your way to recycle your old room air conditioners and dehumidifiers! Just locate the participating Canadian Tire or Home Depot nearest you in these regions on the PickupPal page and enter in your starting point.
PickupPal will find a neighbour going your way.
Another win-win for you and for the environment.
Keep Cool is running in the following locations:

Environmental Benefits: CLEANER AIR
Air conditioning is largely responsible for the increased demand for electricity in the summer time. Summer peaks in energy consumption mean increased emissions from power facilities that often burn dirty fossil fuels. These increased emissions contribute to higher smog levels which impact your health, and the overall health of the planet.
The average room air conditioner used in homes today generates 1.3 tonnes of carbon dioxide yearly. Carbon dioxide is a known contributor to climate change. In addition, room air conditioners contain ozone depleting substances (ODS), such as CFC/HCFCs which traditionally exhaust at landfill sites, contributing to climate change and ozone depletion.
Check out our Tips to help you cool costs. You can save yourself some money, and help the environment, just by remembering a few easy steps!
Saving Energy
The cost of electricity is going up and the participating utilities are doing their part by making the financial investment to help their customers save on electricity costs through conservation efforts. Old, inefficient appliances, such as room air conditioners, lead to unnecessarily high energy bills. We need to help you reduce that!
Responsible Recycling – And Free of Charge!
When an old RAC sputters its last breath of cool air, what happens to its bulky metals and refrigerants? The Clean Air Foundation will safely and responsibly recycle old RACs in accordance with regulations outlined by Environment Canada.
