In 2003, Keep Cool encouraged consumers to bring in their old working RAC to participating retail locations in exchange for a rebate of up to $65 towards a new ENERGY STAR® qualified units. Participating stores included twenty-three Future Shop locations in the Greater Toronto Area, Montreal, Hamilton, or Ottawa for recycling on June 20-22 and 27-29, 2003. Partners in the program were Ontario Power Generation, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Canada, Future Shop, Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance, and Pansonic.

Public response to the 2003 Keep Cool program was strong. Keep Cool successfully collected 354 old room air conditioner units over the program dates, June 20-22 and 27-29, 2003. Of the 354 old units brought in for recycling, 320 participants used the rebate gift cards to purchase new ENERGY STAR® qualified models. The post-program analysis revealed that Keep Cool reduced 50.11 tonnes of CO2, 78.82 Kg of NO, and 360.31 Kg SO2 emissions related to energy savings. Over and above the reduction of emissions related to electricity production, the Keep Cool program captured 62 Kg of R22 (HCFC) gases.
